Citizen Journalism Program First Day


Citizen Journalism program first day was held in MovenPick Hotel Karachi on Sunday 24th September 2017, the program started with the student’s registration from seven Different areas. The Society for international education (SIE) in collaboration with Karachi Youth Initiative started this program for the young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 to teach them the art of the citizen journalism.

The purpose of this program is to give a chance to young adults form their community to cover those stories which are not highlighting on the main stream media said by the Farah Kamal. While talking to the students she further said that you have to work hard for achieving your future goals. Naziya Baloch said that we will cover the hidden stories of Lyari, everyone blaming that Lyari is not peaceful and they are the terrorist but she said that I will cover the talent of Lyari and showcase the hidden stories of Lyari, thanks to SIE for taking such good initiative.

After that the participants were divided in three groups and there were three Training sessions, the first session was about Social Media for citizen Journalism, first all participants insure their self that they are on the all social mediums: Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, after that Miss Farwah discuss about that how can we use social media for the citizen journalism, what are the ways for the positive usage of Social Media .

2nd Training session on photojournalism, in this session first of all our teacher of the Day Aisha Mir taught us different techniques of pictures taking and further she added that how can we take pictures from different angles through our smart phones, our teacher said that photojournalism is a language through which can you tell your story through pictures. Our teacher also thought us that what are the ethics of photojournalism.

3rd Training session on learning to be a reporter, in this our trainer of the was Mr. Zia Ur Rehman form The News newspaper, Mr. Zia ur Rehman  is Pakistani journalist, columnist and author, he taught us how to work on your idea and he said that your main thing is your idea that you want to report or write about. Students love to write about their area, people and community issue, they want highlight the issue and people who are working something good for community and their areas.

 In the session one Sikh community journalist Mr. Ramesh Singh gave us a session about that how to write about communities and he told us that you have to visit the places of others people cultures which are not Muslims you all have to cover their stories for peace.

At the end we had a keynote speaker an Oscar winner Haya Fatima Iqbal , she is an documentary maker and story teller, she told us about her experience with Brandon founder of Humans New York that how he is working and covering stories, she also told us about that how can we take interview of a person and which questions we can ask from them.

Usama Dawood a Youth activist form Hijrat colony Said that this training is very good for the young adults to showcase their areas and communities stories to the people, we hope that we will learn more from this program, he further said that I am happy that we will do more practical work in this program.

So the day was full of learning and information about journalism, learnt a lot and waiting for the stories form the areas, at the end thanks to the people who are behind these all efforts, hard work and did beautiful arrangements for us Saad Rabbani, Farwah Rizvi, zehra Abid and Fizza Abid for facilitating us whole day and helping us to learn something.
